Hackberry
Scientific Name: Celtis occidentalis
Category: Ornamentals
Description:
Hackberry is a large, woody tree native to Kansas. The simple leaf has a toothed margin and often has galls on the backside of the leaf. Leaves are alternate. The fruit is purple and berry-like. Like elms, hackberries have an oblique leaf base, meaning the leaf does not meet at the petiole at the same point. Hackberry leaves are a more muted green than elms and the leaf veins are less prominent.
